1 8 th Grade Language Arts Week 1 Mr. Spinogatti August 17 - 21

2 Homeroom My expectations: Always be on time to class – First tardy is a warning and every tardy after is a detention. ALWAYS have an A.R. book to read. I expect everyone to stand and salute the flag with respect. I expect everyone to listen to KSPS (no talking).

4 Monday, August 17 th Welcome to Mr. Spinogatti’s 8 th Grade Language Arts Class Have a seat as soon as you come in. We will go over our seating chart shortly.

5 Mr. Spinogatti A bit about me….. What we do in this class…. Rules : Follow Directions the first time they are given Be in your seat and prepared to learn when the bell rings Be where you belong Treat others and their possessions with respect. Give respect to get respect. No eating, drinking or gum chewing (Water is acceptable)

11 Community College Community colleges have a 22 percent completion rate. According to a recent study by the National Student Clearinghouse, 15 percent of students who started at two- year institutions in 2006 completed a degree at a four-year institution within six years (Shapiro et al., 2012).Shapiro et al., 2012

12 What Does This Mean For You? 43% of students who start college are not able to take unit bearing classes. What Does the Research Say? Students are not writing very much. Typical secondary student expected to produce 1.6 pages of writing per week in English and 2.1 pages for all other subjects combined. 40% of 12 th graders report hardly ever being asked to write a paper of 3 or more pages.

25 Warm-Up Day : 8/20/15 Picture your favorite food…but don’t say it. Now, describe it in 3 sentences to someone from another country who has never seen or eaten that food—but you cannot say its name!!. Just describe it in writing.
