Exposition is a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, describe, give information or inform. The creator of an expository text can not assume that the reader or listener has prior knowledge or prior understanding of the topic that is being discussed. One important point to keep in mind for the author is to try to use words that clearly show what they are talking about rather then blatantly telling the reader what is being discussed. Expository writing is the most used type of writing by authors. (Especially in everyday life)

Introductory ParagraphMotivator Thesis Sentence – This includes what you will be talking about within your body paragraphs First Body ParagraphTopic Sentence -Supporting Detail 1 -Supporting Detail 2 -Supporting Detail 3 Second Body ParagraphTopic Sentence -Supporting Detail 1 -Supporting Detail 2 -Supporting Detail 3 Third Body ParagraphTopic Sentence -Supporting Detail 1 -Supporting Detail 2 -Supporting Detail 3 Concluding ParagraphReworded Thesis Clincher EXPOSITORY WRITING – ESSAY STRUCTURE

Example of Expository Writing 1.Choose one subject. -Mosquitoes 2. List three reasons. -annoying when I am outside -their bites itch -they carry diseases like the West Nile Virus 3. Each reason gets a paragraph. Each paragraph must only be about one reason and have a minimum of 8 sentences. Remember to stick to the topic! 4. Examples and supporting details must follow each reason. -Topic Sentence -Supporting Detail / Example 5. Use the subject and reasons to construct your introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

Model Paragraph This is an excerpt from an expository essay written on Mosquitoes. This will give you an idea of what is expected in your writing. One reason I hate mosquitoes is because they are so annoying while I am outside. For example, whenever we have cookouts, they want to swarm all around the food. Also, when I go fishing with my Dad, we always have to wear bug spray. The bug spray always stinks to high heaven! Then, if you do not want to use bug spray, the only other way to get them to leave you alone is to wear long sleeves. Yet, who wants to wear long sleeves when it is hot outside? Nothing ruins your day like bloodsucking mosquitoes.

Writing an Introductory and Concluding Paragraph Expository Writing Introductions: -What are expository writers trying to accomplish in introductions? To tell the reader what they are writing about To capture the readers attention Introduction DONT’S: DO NOT introduce yourself as the author DO NOT begin with “I am going to write you about” – Professional writers DO NOT do this! Introduction DO’S: 1 st Sentence: State your subject 2 nd Sentence: Tell how you feel about the subject 3 rd Sentence: State your 3 reasons

Model of an Expository Introduction The one job around the house that I hate to do more than anything else is the garbage. Sometimes I wish that the garbage would just learn to take itself out. Taking the garbage out is such a horrible task because it stinks, it is sticky, and the dogs always carry it away.

Expository Writing Conclusions: -What are expository writers trying to accomplish in conclusions? To sum up the entire essay. Wrap it all together. Conclusion DO’S: 1 st Sentence: Restate your subject 2 nd Sentence: Restate your reasons 3 rd Sentence: State a sentence about the future of the subject Model of an Expository Conclusion Taking out the garbage is the worst household job in the world. No one should have to suffer through the smell, stickiness, or aggravation of the dogs. One day, I hope to be able to have a machine to carry it away for me.
