Honors Physics Lesson #04 LESSON GOALS: Finish Scientific Method video clip P2 video stopped at 11:27. P4 at 9:29. P8 at 16:55. Complete Möbius Strip lab Introduce Mr. L’s Behavior Award System 1/11

Ferdinand Möbius and his Extraordinary Strip Observation: “There is a twist in this loop of paper!” Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Result w/ Conclusion… The main purpose of this lab is to gain practice with using the Scientific Method. There are a few steps to this lab which are given on your lab paper. Materials needed: pen/pencil, strip paper, scissors; tape. This lab should be done in groups of 2 (share scissors...) Your lab paper will help lead you through the steps of the Scientific Method for various experiments using the Möbius Strip. The following few slides (on a dark background) are just to provide you with some information on Möbius’ history and personality. You should not write them down! 2/11

August Ferdinand Möbius His life…and strip... 3/11

Family Life/Background Born in Schulpforta, Saxony (now Germany) An only child Father, dancing teacher, died when August was 3 years old Mother descendent of Martin Luther 4/11

Education Home-schooled until 13 Showed an early interest in mathematics and went to the “college” in Schulpforta Graduated from “college” and went to the University of Leipzig, where he studied Law… >_> Changed his major to mathematics, astronomy, and PHYSICS in the middle of his first year!! w00t! 5/11

Worked with some “Big Names”: Mollweide—an astronomer (thank him for his contributions to math, especially in trigonometry) Gauss—Remind you of anything? Johann Pfaff—Gauss’ teacher…pure mathematician (not an astronomer) 6/11

A Close Call… The Prussian Army wanted to DRAFT him, just at the height of his career!!! ()_();; His response? “This is the most horrible idea I have heard of, and anyone who shall venture, dare, hazard, make bold and have the audacity to propose it will not be safe from my dagger!” 7/11

And so… He went onto bigger and better things… 8/11

INCLUDING!!!! …His marvelous, wonderful, extraordinary… Now you can start the lab experiment! 9/11

Mr. L’s Behavior Award System: 3-questions, 3-points: “Did your class stay on task”? “Was your class quiet when Mr. L was addressing them”? “Was your class respectful”? AWARD WE ARE WORKING TOWARD: real movie! Goal: When your class builds up to 40 points, you get to cash in and watch a real movie (and you can even bring in SOME food if you keep the room clean)! The more often you earn points as a class, the more movies we get to watch this year! PERIOD 2: ℗ PERIOD 1: ℗ PERIOD 7: ℗ PERIOD 5: ℗ PERIOD 4: ℗ PERIOD 8: ℗ 10/11

Looking Ahead: 11/11 Next class we will do a critical analysis on an article entitled Transforming the Electric Infrastructure. I will also assign you your textbooks on Friday.
