Classwork Assignment Use your reader’s notepad to help you to write a paragraph in response to one of the following prompts (assigned by row) to explain how the values of ancient Greek culture are communicated through the myths. Ex: Using supporting evidence from at least two different myths, explain how the myths show that loyalty was highly valued in ancient Greece in a well-constructed paragraph. The myths in Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths by Evslin reveal that loyalty was a very highly valued trait in ancient Greek society. For example, the myth of Hera reveals that loyalty was important and could even excuse one from a just punishment. In the myth, when Zeus forgives Hera’s treachery out of his loyalty to his wife, this concept is communicated to the reader. The narration comments that, after Zeus had imprisoned Hera in the sky for her leading the gods’ rebellion against him, “her weeping kept Zeus awake. In the morning he said he would free her if she swore never to rebel again. She promised, and Zeus promised to mend his ways too” (7). Because of Zeus’s loyalty to his wife and because of Hera’s promise to remain loyal to him, the king of gods frees her from her imprisonment and returns her to Olympus. Furthermore, Zeus’s loyalty to his paramour Leto also communicates the importance of loyalty in ancient Greek culture. In the myth “Sons of Apollo,” Apollo slays the Cyclopes in Hephaestus’ smithy because they forged the thunderbolt that Zeus used to kill Apollo’s son Asclepius. As a result, Zeus banishes Apollo to Tartarus, but Apollo’s banishment would only be temporary due to the intercession of his mother and Zeus’s old love, Leto. Zeus’s loyalty to Leto is communicated in the following narration: “But Mother Leto came and pleaded with him, reminding him of their old love. She spoke so beautifully that Zeus relented, withdrew the edict of Apollo’s banishment, and even agreed to bring Asclepius back to life” (41). Out of loyalty to the nymph Leto and because of the love they once shared, Zeus agrees to withdraw his punishment of Apollo. Evslin’s telling of the myths suggests that the gods could be quite cruel and inflict very severe punishments at times; however, the myths also indicate that loyalty could bring about a god’s mercy as evinced by the myths “Hera” and “Sons of Apollo.”
