LESSON TOPIC: RATIOS LESSON OBJECTIVE: I CAN… UNDERSTAND THAT A RATIO IS AN ORDERED PAIR OF NON- NEGATIVE NUMBERS, NOT 0. UNDERSTAND THAT THE ORDER IN THE RATIO DOES MATTER. CREATE MULTIPLE RATIOS FROM A CONTEXT IN WHICH 2 OR MORE QUANTITIES ARE GIVEN.

EXAMPLE 1: The coed soccer team has four times as many boys on it as it has girls. We say the ratio f the number of boys to the number of girls is 4:1. We read this as four to one. Let’s create a table to show the possibilities of the number of boys and girls on the soccer team.

TABLE FOR EXAMPLE 1: # of Boys# of GirlsTotal # of Players

WHAT IS THE RATIO OF THE NUMBER OF BOYS TO GIRLS ON THE TEAM IS 3:2? # of Boys# of GirlsTotal # of Players

CAN I SAY THERE ARE 3 TIMES AS MANY BOYS AS GIRLS? Why?

MAKE A TAPE DIAGRAM TO SHOW THAT THERE ARE 3/2 AS MANY BOYS AS GIRLS.

DISCUSSION… Find the ratio of boys to girls in class. Create 2 ratios of your own.

USING WORDS DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING RATIOS: 1 to 12 12:1 2 to 5 5 to 2

EXPLORATORY CHALLENGE… WRITE 3 RATIOS FOR THE FOLLOWING TABLE. Color of T-Shirt# of T-shirts Red1 Blue4 Green2 White7 Pink5 Orange3 Yellow4

LESSON SUMMARY… Ratios can be written in three ways… 1.A to B 2.A : B 3.A / B We can describe ratio relationships with words such as: to, for each, for every The ratio A : B is not the same as the ratio B : A unless A = B

RATE YOURSELF… 1 – I do not understand this lesson. 2 – I can do this lesson with help. 3 – I understand this lesson. 4 – I could teach this lesson. How will you expand your knowledge?
