GPS SS6G9a. Explain the major concerns of Europeans regarding the issues such as acid rain in Germany, the air pollution in the United Kingdom, and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine.
2
Germany: Acid Rain Smoke from factories & power plants Car and bus exhaust Kills wildlife Pollutes rivers Damages soil and trees Eats holes in statues & buildings CAUSES EFFECTS
4
Germany’s Acid Rain Solutions Factories use water power instead of coal. Laws reduce car & factory emissions. (Smoke/exhaust) New energy sources – wind and solar power.
5
UK: Air Pollution SMOG Air pollution caused by sunlight + car & factory exhausts Great Smog of 1952 Lasted 4 days Increased crime Slowed transportation Thousands died
6
United Kingdom Smog Causes Burning coal Car/ diesel exhaust Factory emissions Effects Asthma Pneumonia Blackens buildings Threatens wildlife
7
UK Air Pollution Solutions Smokeless zones (no smoky fuels) Cleaner coal Increased use of electricity & natural gas Laws to make cars produce cleaner exhaust People drive less
8
Ukraine: Nuclear Disaster
9
Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). A chain reaction in the reactor went out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,000 people had to be evacuated….forever.
10
Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster Reactor was buried in concrete. It still is not safe. Cancer rates have increased. Radiation has been discovered all over Europe. Because of wind currents, a mistake in one country can affect other countries!
