1 Water Pollution Spring 2016

2 How many gallons do you use in a day?
A LOT!!!

3 4.3 Water, Air, and Land Resources
Each day, people use fresh water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and growing food. Unfortunately, the water on our planet gets polluted via human activities

4 What is water quality? First, you must know how the water will be used – for drinking? For farming? For watering you garden? The quality of water changes as it interacts with the environment (via the water cycle) Surface water Ground water

5 4.3 Water, Air, and Land Resources
 Freshwater Pollution Point source pollution comes from a known and specific location, such as factory pipes. Nonpoint source pollution is pollution that does not have a specific point of origin. Runoff is the water that flows over the land rather than seeping into the ground, often carrying nonpoint source pollution.

6 Major Types of Water Pollution

7 Water Pollution Observations
List the different ways in which water moves throughout the city. Identify as many point pollutants and nonpoint pollutants from the image. List your observations in a “T” chart.

8

9 Coffee Filter Demo What happened to the “pollution”?
What color of pollution traveled the furthest from the point of contamination? Did any pollutants reach the imaginary wells? Did any of the pollutants travel uphill (against gravity?) Are pollutant paths relatively easy to predict? What are some factors in the real environment that would affect the directions and rates of movement of pollutants?
