First of all…. What is text?

Text Text is words. We use text to get information. We have text on road signs, on posters, and in books.

So, what is a text feature? A text feature is something we can find in a book that will help us to understand what we read.

What are the different kinds of text features? Bold Font Glossary Index Table of Contents Topic Sentence Concluding Sentence Paragraph

Bold Font Catches my attention and tells me a word is important. I will usually be able to find these words in the glossary.

Glossary Is found in the back of the book and gives the definition of bold words

Index This lists all of th topics in a book in ABC order and tells me what page I can find the information on

Sample Index Apples, 112 Artichokes, 40 Bananas, 70 Coconuts, 24 Fruit Cocktail, 78

Table of Contents Lists all of the chapters or headings in order by page number.

Topic Sentence A sentence that tells what a paragraph is mainly about.

Concluding Sentence The last sentence in a paragraph that wraps up the ideas.

Paragraph Organizes information in the text Always indented 3-5 sentences All about one main idea

Sample I had a wonderful summer. First, I started sleeping in every day. I would then go swimming with my friends. I stayed up late watching TV a lot, and I went to camp for a week. I wished my summer would never end!
