Grammar allows you to examine the component parts of language Semantics is the study of meaning Pragmatics is about decoding meaning Syntax is all about getting the words in the right order Lexis is the study of words or vocabulary Morphology is the study of word structure Phonology is the systematic study of sounds Graphology is the study of writing and forms of print Systematic Language Frameworks

Changes over time As it moved through the ages the word changed in its meaning from the original. Here are some that have applied during their passage to the present day. Study of the occult - the Anglo Norman version gramarie had this meaning. Magic - Old French gramoire meant a book of magic. A spell - Walter Scott used the variant glamour in the nineteenth c. with this meaning. So, as you can see, the word has had a long and varied history.

Here are some of today’s definitions of Grammar: The systematic study and description of a language. A set of rules which govern the language and allow sentences to be generated which make sense to the receiver. OR A book which sets out the rules of grammar. The system learned in infancy by any native speaker.
