Section 2-2: Making Decisions & Setting Goals

I. Making Responsible Decisions - Decisions about major life issues must be made carefully & deliberately. - Treat decision making like you would approaching a busy intersection. . Slow down, look for approaching cars! Proceed with caution, while searching for possible risks. Once risks have been identified & weighed, act decisively and without hesitation.

II. The Decision-Making Model Health-literate people are critical thinkers & problem solvers. - they evaluate information from reliable sources. - then they make responsible decisions. The decision-making model helps you act in a way consistent with this trait.

The Decision-Making Model = 6 basic steps in making important decisions: 1. State the Situation - What decisions need to be make ? -Identify others your decision will affect. 2. List the Possible Options -What choices could you make? -Include “not at all” option if appropriate. -Share your options with reliable people. -Ask for advice.

Weigh the Possible Outcomes -Are there positive & negative results? -Weigh the consequences of each option. -Is the decision safe, legal, & healthful? -Does it show respect for you & others? 4. Consider Your Values -Does the decision go along with family & community values? -How will you feel about your decision, in a week, a month, a year from now?

Decision-Making Model Cont. 5. Make A Decision & Take Action -Use your knowledge to make a responsible decision. 6. Evaluate Your Decision -What was the outcome? -How did it affect me? -How did it affect others? -What have I learned?

III. Setting Goals Life is not just a series of events that simply happen to you. Life is a work of art you are constantly shaping & creating. How you view you life has a major effect on your health & well being. Having & setting goals helps shape your life in positive directions.

There are 2 kinds of goals: 1. Short Term Goals = getting homework done by 9 o’clock. 2. Long Term Goals = becoming an engineer or a doctor. - long-term goals can be achieved by breaking them down into a series of short-term goals. - A goal is something you aim for that takes planning and work ( action plan).

The Goal Setting Process Model 1. Select A Goal To Work On. - Be specific & realistic. -Make goals positive. -Focus your energies on succeeding. 2. List What You Will Do To Reach Your Goal. -Break goal down into smaller tasks. 3. Identify Sources For Help & Support. -Family, friends, teachers, neighbors.

Goal Setting Model Cont. 4. Set a Reasonable Time For Reaching Goal. -Be realistic -Be flexible 5. Establish Check Points To Evaluate Progress -Check points should be reasonable & realistic. 6. Reward Yourself For Reaching Your Goal. -Congratulate yourself -Enjoy personal satisfaction
