2 Problem and Hypothesis  The study was designed to investigate the Latino community of Fuquay-Varina based on Strengths Weaknesses Needs/Necessary improvements Future plans What are the differences between the Latino part of the community and the non-Latino part?

3 Methods and Data  Site: Fuquay-Varina in Wake County North Carolina  Toured the community and attended Spanish mass to develop contacts and discussion topics  Interviewed 15 non-Latino and 17 Latino community members - formed focus groups 1 team member asked questions, 1 took notes and tape recorded  Analyzed discussions and developed codes and themes to organize the results in a spreadsheet  Secondary statistics used (demographic statistics, school data, etc.)

4 Results  Both Latino and non-Latino: Human resources and community involvement key to community More involvement between the two groups Transportation concerns High housing costs Recognize cultural/language barrier as an obstacle

5 Latinos  Emphasized inaccessibility and lack of publicity of services  Transportation- Concerned with difficulty of getting a driver’s license  Youth more likely to be encouraged to work than pursue education  Want more bilingual services while non-Latinos encourage Latinos to learn English.

6 Conclusions  Both Latinos and non-Latinos share similar views about community issues  The differences were most often found in the causes of and solutions for these issues  Criticism Data could have been more useful if analyzed more specifically. Conclusions were vague Focus groups subjective- only analyzed by 2 people
