Atmosphere to plants Carbon is attached oxygen in a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). Through photosynthesis carbon dioxide is taken from the air to make plant food. Photosynthesis: 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O → C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 Carbon dioxide + Water + Light energy → Glucose + Oxygen
3
Plants to animals Carbon that is in the plants are moved into animals that eat them. For the animals that eat other animals the carbon is transferred from their food too.
4
Plants & animals into the ground When the animals and plants die, their bodies decay and bring carbon into the ground.
5
Living things to atmosphere Every time you exhale, you release carbon dioxide into the air. Plants and animals release carbon dioxide through the process respiration. Respiration: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 = 6H 2 O + 6CO 2 + ENERGY
6
Fossil fuels to atmosphere When people burn fossil fuels through powering cars, trucks, and power plants, carbon enters the atmosphere. A huge amount of carbon is released from fuels. 3.3 billion tons enters the atmosphere and most of the rest is dissolved in seawater.
7
Atmosphere to oceans Carbon enters the ocean mainly through the dissolution of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which is converted into carbonate. It is converted by organisms into organic carbon through photosynthesis. Oceanic absorption of carbon dioxide is one of the most important forms of limiting the human caused rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
