Why this Rebirth? Crusades and Bubonic Plague caused death and destruction in Europe – Medieval society very rigid. – Chaos of the black death shook the foundations of society. Less people = higher demand for their specific labor and skills = emergence of paid workers Same wealth spread among fewer people

Why this rebirth? Cities reemerged and people moved to them Skilled middle class begins to form Emergence of Absolute Monarchs Fall of Constantinople –Byzantine scholars, Roman culture move back to Italy

Crusades Military campaigned sanctioned by the Catholic church Series of wars and expeditions by European Christians to oust Muslims from the Holy Land (aka modern day Israel). –Epic FAIL Results –Spread of knowledge. Most to Europeans. –Spread of trade. Demand for spices and silk.

Characteristics of the Renaissance: Humanism Individualism Questioning attitude Growing interest in secular, or non-religious worldly matters Rise of the middle class (disposable income) Great achievements in the arts How are these characteristics of society different from those of Medieval Western European society?

Humanism A perspective on the world that is focused on human achievements and human potential rather than religious themes. Secular (vs. Spiritual) Concentrated on everyday human problems and relationships. Advance one’s self through life- long learning → Renaissance Man Began in Italy and gradually spread to Northern Europe
