Types of Appointments Tenure track –Confers tenure –Usually more research intensive –May have “clinical” tenure track Clinical track –Sometimes called non-tenure track –Clinical practice emphasis –Focus of most new hires

Types of Appointments Having a clear understanding of the type of track you are looking at is critical. Are there co-funding aspects ? Is soft money involved ?

Relevant Comparisons All comparisons are based on all criteria that are up for evaluation. Quality and impact come up a great deal. Comparison to others in the field The dreaded anonymous outside letters

Faculty Development Strategy Get annual evaluations from the department chair. Do the promotion paperwork every year. Make sure you get the evaluations you need. Read the evaluations you get. Keep CV and Supporting Documentation up to date. Know the process cold.

Pitfalls It’s all about me! Overextension Not listening to feedback (be honest about your shortcomings) Getting scared Losing focus Not taking advantage of opportunities Not giving back

Evaluation System Lack of knowledge about deadlines can be problematic. Academia is great if you understand what you are getting into. Evaluations involve many layers and documentation is key.

Networking Need a plan Use your former mentors Use your School’s mentors Map it out in your second-third year

Reputation, Feedback, and Emotional Intelligence All these tie-in and create the “good academic citizen”.

Summary Being faculty is a wonderful career. Independence is great but needs to be managed. You are part of a larger team that supports and needs you. Balance what you want and what others want of you. Always try to get better since the opportunities are endless.

Summary (cont) Things can go wrong, and that’s OK. Use emotional intelligence. Nurture your network. Remember, you’re faculty !!!
