5 George Orwell‘s 1984 LessonAims Content Procedure Method Material required Homework 4 Ss are able to read and work silently on their own Ss can improve their speaking skills, especially fluency and pronunciation -Ss have time to read chapters 6, 7 and 8 (or listen to it) and elaborate 3 questions which will be posted on the online platform. - While students are reading silently, T works with small groups to let them read aloud and correct them where necessary Finish reading part 1, chapters 6, 7 & 8 Post 3 questions on the platform and answer 3 questions

6 George Orwell‘s 1984 LessonAims Content Procedure Method Home work 5 & 6 Ss will understand the time period portrayed in the novel Ss are able to put the information found on the internet in a wiki - Discussion of most important / most controversial / most difficult questions in class -Web quest and wiki T writes the first paragraph in a new wiki with different topics to be worked on. Ss have to search information and continue the wiki in order to have a general overview of the political context at the end (T could also provide handouts with information which must be summarized) Topics: Totalitarianism and its dangers, utopia and dystopia, Stalin and Trotsky and the geography of that time Read part 2, chapters 1, 2 & 3 Focus on the characters

Afterwards, groups are mixed and the information is exchanged. And/or watch a video on CNN or another news channel about a current case of torture Read part 3, chapter 4, 5 & 6

T collects Ss’ reactions about the ending, if it met their expectations, why/ why not -Discuss the role of Mr Charrington and O’Brien in the betrayal - Ss can rewrite O’Brien’s monologues (session 9) Handout with questions about Mr Charrington and O’Brien Read part 2, chapter 9
