Reference Groups Groups used for self-evaluation and the formation of attitudes, values, beliefs and norms –Families, Tribal Elders, Gangs, “Popular Kids,” Celebrities, etc…

In Groups/ Out Groups Exclusive groups that demand loyalty- usually require an initiation rite Point of View determines “in” vs. “out” –EX: a cheerleader thinks cheerleaders are an “in” group and people who are uninvolved in school are “out” groups; Stoners think they are an “in” group and the straight-edge kids are an “out” group

Social Networks Web of social relationships linking people to other people (think: 6 degrees of separation or “it’s a small world”) –Functions to offer support/advice; tool for employment/advancement
