Exemplars Fence Painting o Suggested Grade Span – Grades 3-5 o Grade(s) in Which Task was Piloted – Grade 4 Problem Solving

Fencing Painting Carly is painting her grandmother’s fence. Carly can paint 1/6 of the fence in 30 minutes. Carly will start painting the fence at 8:30 in the morning. Her grandmother wants to take Carly to a movie at noon as a thank you for working so hard. Will Carly be done painting the entire fence in time to go to the movie with her grandmother? Problem Solving

Summative vs Formative Assessment

Formative assessment The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work help teachers recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately Summative vs Formative Assessment

Formative assessment Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value. Examples of formative assessments include asking students to: o draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic o submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture o turn in a research proposal for early feedback Summative vs Formative Assessment

Summative assessment The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Summative vs Formative Assessment

Summative assessment Examples of summative assessments include: o a midterm exam o a final project o a paper o a senior recital Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses. Summative vs Formative Assessment

ACTIVITY… Take slips of paper from envelop. Find the headings “Formative Assessment” and “Summative Assessment.” Work with other members at your table to arrange the descriptions noted on the remaining slips of paper under the assessment heading to which it refers. Summative vs Formative Assessment

Formative Assessment It is used to check students’ understanding and to plan subsequent instruction The information gained guides next steps in instruction and helps teachers and students consider the additional learning opportunities needed to ensure success. Assessment information must be fed forward into an instructional model that allows for responsiveness to student need. Assessment helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. Assigning projects and performances Giving writing assignments Giving tests Asking questions Exit slips

Summative vs Formative Assessment Summative Assessment Assessment of learning which provides teachers and students with information about the attainment of content knowledge. Assessments often result in grades which means that they have a high point value. The goal of assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Assessment used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and services at the end of an academic year or at pre-determined time. A senior recital A final project Midterm exam A paper National exams
