Water Column Breakout Discussed three threads –Procurement Needs, technologies to acquire soon and put to use, but not necessarily every day/dive –Investment Needs, technologies to invest in for future use –Themes, ideas that came up and were worth noting
2
Procurement Needs (Source) Detritus Sampler, (MBARI) Suction Sampler with accessories (MBARI) Niskens for ROV/Sled, (MBARI) Hot fluid sampler (PMEL) Sophisticated H20 sampler (WHOI/URI) Flourometers, DO, transmissometer, nutrient analyzers (shallow only), backscatter, Go to a trade show with a big checkbook. VARS and AVED (MBARI) EH Redox (PMEL) Video Plankton recorder (commercial) Laser-optical counter (commercial) Gradiometer (commercial) Bioluminescence (USCB Lab, Wetlabs) Mass-spec (WHOI) Flow Cytometer (commercial) Passive acoustics, especially as an add to the Ewing stations

Investment Needs Far out –Long term PH sensor –CO2 sensors are tricky? Nearer term –Polymerase Chain reaction –Genetic bar coding –Monoclonal antibody sensors

Themes Okeanos Explorer can support tech transition (the 10x cost factor between development and operation) New tech (esp. in situ and digital) is needed due to limited sample storage and to make good use of high bandwidth Need some additional platforms, –Towed, AUV, USV? –Near shore exploration in the rest of the world could benefit from technology like USVs, especially cheap stuff. This also could widen the reach of the EX while on station. Video/optical based is good alternative to towed nets Micro-structure methodology needs to be considered/investigated – frequently serendipitous Tele-presence both enables and challenges new digital and in situ tools –Quality and maintainability are issues, look to IOOS and discuss –Sensors can/should be “accessible” from shore, allowing the super-user to connect in an uninterrupted way, when appropriate. High end sensors should be contracted not bought –Care and feeding (maintenance and QA/QC) –Always get the latest technology –Applied in the broader oceanographic context along with other data collected (rosetta stone)
