3 Unit 8 Written Assignment Write a 2 to 3 page paper responding to the following: Identify the ethical issues within the field of criminal investigation as applied to wrongful conviction based upon tainted or faulty line-ups. – Address the ethical responsibilities of law enforcement in their requirements for fairness, and responsibility to ensure there are no wrongful convictions based upon false identification. – Identify the processes utilized by law enforcement in the identification of suspects. – Consider individuals making identifications, do so in error at times, others intentionally, or are led by law enforcement through improper actions

4 Team Killers In non-relative category, males almost exclusively assumed leadership One person psychologically maintains control of the other member(s) of the team Team relationships tend to be built on deception, bravado and intimidation Less specific as to their victims, although most targeted strangers Guns are commonly used Team killers typically have motives of a sexual nature

5 Alton Coleman and Debra D. Brown Killed variety of victims (young/elderly; men/women; various races) Abducted, raped, robbed and strangled victims Traveled throughout states Coleman’s childhood included prostitute mother who rejected him; lived with grandparents Rape, violence and aggressive behavior in past Brown was easily influenced and dominated Coleman was executed in 2002 Brown death sentence commuted to life in prison; filing appeals

6 Douglas D. Clark and Carol A. Bundy Victims were prostitutes and runaways Killed in Hollywood CA—Sunset Boulevard Abducted, sexually abused, shot, necrophilia Kept a killing bag in car; trophies from victims Bundy photographed sexual exploitations; assisted with disposal of bodies No known abuse in childhood Clark claimed that Bundy was the real mastermind Clark sentenced to die in San Quentin’s gas chamber; Bundy died of diabetes complications in 2004

7 Gerald A. Gallego Jr. & Charlene Gallego Victims were women ranging from teens to thirties Gerald wanted to have young girls for sex slaves Abducted, raped, beat, shot or bludgeoned Traveled to a few different states Childhood included father who was executed for killing 2 correctional officers; had his own extensive criminal history Charlene—loving family/childhood Gerald sentenced to death; died of cancer in 2002 Charlene serving two concurrent 16+ year sentences in Nevada
