3  Selecting is highlighting a block of text  The easiest way to select text is to simply click at one end of the text and move the mouse to the other end of the text while holding the left mouse button down.

4  Drag and drop is an easy way to move a block of text.  To drag and drop: ◦ Select (highlight) the text to be moved. ◦ Release the mouse button. ◦ With the text still highlighted, press the left mouse button again, holding it down as you drag it to the new location.

5  Show/Hide allows you to see hidden formatting markers.  This allows you to see the enter, space, and tab.

6 ◦ The tab looks like →. ◦ The paragraph marks looks like ¶. ◦ The space looks like ∙.

7  Toggle commands cause two options to switch on and off with the same button. ◦ Show/Hide is an example of a toggle button.

8 Undo/Redo/Repeat will become your friends!  Use undo to reverse a recent action.  Use redo to reverse an undo action.  Use repeat repeats the most recent action. In the exercises, you may become frustrated because they have you do an action, undo it, and then redo it. This is just for practice in this chapter. Just

9  The Clipboard is a temporary storage location for text or pictures when they have been cut or copied.

10  The copy command places a copy of selected text from the document on the clipboard while the original text remains in the document. ◦ It is the first step in copying text. ◦ The second step is to paste it in the correct location.  The paste command causes what is in the clipboard to be inserted into your document.  The cut command removes selected text from the document and places it on the clipboard.  It is used to move text.

11  Use find to quickly search a document for every occurrence of a specific word or phrase. ◦ It looks for words and formatting in a document. ◦ For example, you could use it to look for every time you had the word Senior.

12  Use replace to quickly search a document for every occurrence of a specific word or phrase and replace it with another word or phrase. ◦ This can be done for one instance or you can Replace All. ◦ For example, you would use Replace All if you want to look for every time you have the word Senior and change to Junior.

13  Match case searches for words that are capitalized the same as words you have typed.  Wildcards make it possible to use special characters to search. ◦ * - any number of characters ◦ ? - one character  Sounds like searches for words that sound the same (so, sew).  Format lets you search for formatting (bold, underline, etc.).

14 ◦ Find whole words only looks for the exact word or phrase. ◦ Find all word forms lets you find different forms of the same word, such as run, runs, running.

15  One of the quickest way to move through a long document is the Go To command.

16 Word Count also lets you know the number of characters, paragraphs, and lines in a document. If you double click on the circled area, the Word Count dialog box will appear. As you type and edit a document, the number of words is a document appears in the status bar and is updated as you type.

17 Proofreading is editing a printed or electronic document for errors. It is very important to proof your documents to ensure a good grade or make a good impression on others for job applications, resumes, etc.  Some helpful ways to help with proofreading are: ◦ Read over carefully yourself reading each section word for word ◦ Read the words backwards ◦ Preview a printed version ◦ Get someone to help by reading over your work ◦ Check out some websites for other ideas.

18 Proofreader’s marks are a standard set of symbols for marking errors that need correcting.
