3 + 3 Today’s Objective… Today we are going to analyze the effect religion has had on the shaping of democracy using this lecture and our textbooks.

4 4 + Judeo-Christian Tradition Judaism promotes the ideas of: people are responsible for making moral choices fighting poverty and injustice Ten Commandments Christianity promotes the ideas of equality which is central to democracy. It allowed the moral code of Judaism (10 Commandments) to be widely accepted.

5 5 + The Renaissance and the Reformation Renaissance: Further the ideas of individualism and of challenging authoritarian institutions. Rediscovered the Greek and Roman philosophers Reformation: Martin Luther questions the Roman Catholic Church which had not been done until this point. Breaks way from RCC and begins Lutheran (Protestant) religion

6 6 + Processing… Analyzing Primary Sources: Pg. 13: The Ten Commandments 1. Comparing: Do the 1 st four commandments concern themselves more with the Hebrews’ relationship with God or with one another? What do the last 6 commandments have in common that distinguish them from the 1 st four? Which commandments have influenced our democratic society the most?
