IPv4 Outage Event IETF71 Plenary

What? This is not about demonstrating an IPv6 transition mechanism –very clearly, no one expects to leap out of IPv4 and into IPv6 (only) –this is not an assertion that NATs will cease to exist This is about focusing on a desired end goal –globally addressable Internet –knowing what it means to make IPv6 work –seeing what actually exists of IPv6 Internet so far and this is increasing rapidly

Why? The current IPv4-based Internet is going to change –if we want to have an effect on how it changes, we have to do our (engineering) part –we need more shared data and experience, and less FUD This is an opportunity to play

SSID: ietf-v6ONLY your notebook/device is connected by IPv6 only you can only reach other IPv6-capable (and IPv6 reachable) machines this includes DNS –need IPv6 DNS NS’s, glue –your machine needs to be able to do DNS lookups on IPv6 Please ignore the SSIDs behind the curtain –(May be leakage of v4 SSIDs from elsewhere)

A few other notes No NAT-PT -- not translating to access IPv4 sites No DNS shim to support Windows XP This is different in intent than NANOG, APRICOT IPv6 hours –those demonstrated making IPv6 event networks work interface with the whole Internet (IPv6 and IPv4) –this focuses on a desired, if hypothetical, endpoint with a view to engineering for it you drive where you are looking

Some questions Did you start preparing your laptop for this event –some days or weeks ago –since you arrived in Philadelphia – “Where’s the handout?” ;-) How ready were you? –“All set -- I use IPv6 all the time” –caught a few glitches –first time consciously playing with IPv6

More questions Did you participate in preparing systems outside the IETF network for this event? (e.g., home website) How ready were you? –“All set -- I use IPv6 all the time” –caught a few glitches –first time consciously playing with IPv6

What to do tonight If you have an IPv6-capable client and an account on a server you can reach via IPv6 –join ipv6-experiment@conference.amsl.com –add your experiences of things that do/not work Go to the event wiki –http://wiki.tools.isoc.org/IETF71_IPv4_Outage –check out the sites listed that are IPv6 accessible and tour http://www.ietf.org http://ipv6.google.com –add your experiences of things that do/not work

Are we ready?

Let the fun begin…
