Direct Object Pronouns A direct object is the person or thing receiving the action of the verb. To figure out what the direct object is, you can ask yourself “what” or “whom?” – For example if you have the sentence: “Él habla,” you know that hablar means “to talk.” You would ask yourself “Who talks?” Your answer is “he,” which would be your direct object.

Direct objects can be nouns or pronouns. They are used to avoid repeating nouns that have already been mentioned. Pronouns must agree with the nouns they are replacing. – What’s a noun? – What’s a pronoun?

MasculineFeminine Singularlo-him, itla-her, it Plurallos-themlas-them ***These are almost all the same as your DEFINITE ARTICLES (el, la, los, las). The only one different is the singular masculine “lo.” Don’t get “el” and “lo” mixed up.

Where do direct object pronouns go? Placed before the conjugated verb – I drink it. (water-el agua)  Yo lo bebo. If your sentence has a conjugated AND an infinitive verb, the pronoun can go before the conjugated verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. – I want to drink it.  Yo quiero beberlo.

Bellringer 4/29 Write the sentences and include the direct object pronoun that would replace each direct object. 1.Escuchamos el radio.  ____ escuchamos. 2.Yo doy el libro a Luis.  Yo ____ doy a Luis. 3.El estudiante necesita su calculadora.  El estudiante ____ necesita. 4.No veo a las muchachas.  No ____ veo. 5.Ella compra los zapatos.  ____ compra.

Positive Informal Commands with Pronouns When you use a pronoun with a positive informal command, attach it to the end of the verb. Add an accent to the second to last vowel unless it is only one syllable. Ponlo  doesn’t get an accent because “pon” is one syllable Mézclalo  accent goes on the second to last vowel.
