2 The Revolutionary War Standard 11.1 – Analyze the sig. events that lead to the development of our nation and its attempts to realize its guiding philosophies. Essential Question: What were the causes of the American Revolutionary War?

3 Economic Causes of The Revolution 1. Mercantilism The British wanted its colonies to produce raw materials for them The Americans were supposed to buy only British goods ex. tea, molasses, glass, fur hats The Navigation Acts set up the laws regulating this system These policies made goods more expensive for colonial Americans 2. Taxation Britain raised taxes to pay for the war. ex. Sugar Tax (1764), Stamp Tax (1765) The colonists boycotted the taxes until they were repealed. 8 The Declaration of Independence, 1776 Thomas Jefferson explains John Locke so that average people can understand it. natural rights, government by consent, social contract He lists reasons the king should be fired and America should be its own nation. It’s so convincing that France gives us muskets, gunpowder, ships, troops, and officers. CSS 11.1 “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…”

9 From Concord to Yorktown, 1775 - 1783 Britain had more money and a much better military. They won almost every battle but could not win the war America was able to turn a rebellion into a costly world war against Britain It’s enough and after 8 years of fighting the British will sign the Treaty of Paris in 1783. “Britain’s Vietnam” CSS 11.1
