Freedmen’s Bureau Government agency which helped former slaves during the reconstruction period

Black Codes Laws that were passed by the states in the south. They limited the rights of African Americans after the Civil War.

The Bureau gave food and clothes to former slaves and they tried to find jobs for the freedmen. The Bureau helped poor whites too. This organization helped more than one million people.

The black Code granted some rights like African Americans being able to marry one another legally. And they were allowed to own small amounts of property. The Black codes didn’t allow freedmen the right to vote or to own guns, or serve on juries. Without contracts when working they could be arrested and would be forced to work on plantations.

The Freedmen’s Bureau had congress pass a bill. That agreed to help former slaves and President Lincoln signed it.

Reasons why Freedmen’s Bureau ended Republican Revolt’s began –People did not vote for Republican candidates anymore Amnesty Act – in May 1872 Congress passed this act which gave the southerner's all their rights. Like voting and being able to hold office. As long as they supported the Democratic Party. Democratic Party began to claim power once more All of these signs led to the “giving up” on the idea of Reconstruction.
