1 Photosynthesis Process whereby green plants convert (energy poor) inorganic compounds into (energy rich) organic compounds.

2 What is required for photosynthesis to work?
How do the enter the plant? What is produced from photosynthesis?

3 LEAF CROSS SECTION

4 STOMATA

5 Stomata Prac

6 General Equation for Photosynthesis
Chlorophyll-a is high energy and powers the synthesis of ATP

7 Where is the energy contained in organic compounds?
Answer????????????????? In the chemical bonds holding the atoms together.

8 What does this mean? Where is the energy????

9 Where does photosynthesis occur?
Ans: Chloroplasts

10 Structure of a chloroplast
(Grana)

11 Some definitions………… Thylakoids: Disk shaped membranes containing photosynthetic pigments. Grana: Stacks of thylakoids. Stroma: Fluid filled space surrounding grana.

12 What happens in the chloroplast?
Two main stages. 1. Light Dependent Reactions 2. Light Independent (Dark) Reactions

13 Light Dependent Reactions
What happens????? Occurs in the grana of the chloroplasts Chlorophyll captures sunlight energy and transfers it to electrons. The electrons are “excited”.

14 Light Dependent Reactions involves two key parts
1. Splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This is called photolysis. 2. Electron Transport Chains. This is where energy captured from light is used to form ATP.

15 Light Independent Reactions (Dark Reactions)
Enzymes in the stroma use the chemical energy of ATP to produce glucose. To do this, carbon dioxide is combined with hydrogen to produce glucose.

16 Do you remember this? Let’s simplify it!

17 Oxygen used for aerobic respiration
Oxygen in glucose comes from carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide comes from the air and provides raw materials for production of glucose Oxygen comes from the water from Provides Hydrogen required in glucose Glucose is used as a fuel for cellular respiration or to construct larger molecules such as cellulose, , starch or disaccharide molecules such as fructose.

18 Refer To Pages 45 of your Text Book for an overview of photosynthesis

19 Next time you see a lettuce, show it some respect before you eat it.
