Southern Strategy What was it? -Nixon only won by 1% in 1968 and hoped to increase it -Aimed to solidify the Republican Party's electoral hold over conservative white Southerners. What happened? -Southern Democrats took notice of the fact that 1964 Republican Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater had voted against the Civil Rights Act.

(cont’d) -1969, Nixon ordered the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) to delay desegregation of South Carolina and Mississippi schools. -Nixon apposed the extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that added nearly 1 million African Americans to voting rolls

Southern Strategy (Cont’d) What happened? (cont’d) -1971,Nixon attempted to stop using busses to integrate schools, favored by southerners, but was overruled in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. -Boston and Detroit protested the mixed bussing. -Nixon Appeared on National TV urging Congress to halt the integration through busing.
