Covalent Bonding By: Munir Cekic Class 11B Chemistry- Br. Khaled Ph.D.

Covalent Bonding Covalent Bonding is a type of chemical bond that involves the sharing of electrons It’s different then Ionic bonding. Ionic bonding is losing or gaining electrons.

Covalent bonding Bonding follows something known as the octet rule. It’s a way of matching bonds through a atoms valence electrons.

Lewis dot structure Lewis dot structure Lewis structures show each atom and its position in the structure of the molecule using its chemical symbol. The total number of electrons represented in a Lewis structure is equal to the sum of the numbers of valence electrons on each individual atom.

LEWIS STRUCTURE Example of a Lewis dot structure

Covalent Bonding As you can see in the previous slide, it shows an image of Cl2 (Chlorine) bonding with another Cl2. Instead of one Cl2 gaining and the other one loosing, they share a pair of electrons.

Neither atom was able to give up an electron. Chlorine being highly elctronegative it wouldn’t give up an electron. The bar between the Cl2’s shows the bond where they share the electrons.

That’s what makes a covalent bond different then an Ionic bond. The Lewis structure also being able to show the bonding also helps a lot.

THE END ! That was the basic idea of what a covalent bond is. Hope you understood ! BYE !
