1 Environment Project By: Zack Luchtefeld

2 Action Plan I am trying to reduce the use of all plastic bottles at Blue Valley West. My plan to do so is as follows: -Each incoming Freshman or new student to the school will receive a Blue Valley West water bottle. This will be included in the yearly tuition price. Those that cannot afford tuition or those on state funding, will receive their water bottle free of charge by a newly formed program set up though PTO. -If a student loses his bottle, he can purchase one for $1.50. These can be purchased though a vending machine found in the Commons. These water bottles will be donated from an outside source or the purchase price will be reduced due to the large bulk needed to supply the school. -Blue Valley West will make the conscience decision to stop purchasing all other drink products, such as Gatorade, Vitamin Water, soda, etc. and only use water fountains and BVW logo water bottles. -Water fountains will be equipped with purified, cold water. All of the water fountains will have a spigot for students to place their water bottles under in which to fill their bottle with ease. -Those that do not want to participate will be able to use the water fountains. 2 water fountains will be placed in the Commons for meal time purposes. -Incentives to have students use their water bottles: - free entrance into sports activities (encouraging an active lifestyle) -discounts on food items in the cafeteria

3 Business Plan This will be a student-run program through students enrolled in CAPS wishing to learn more about business. The CAPS business students would be responsible for ordering, purchasing, and distributing the water bottles to the students and maintaining and supplying the vending machine placed in the Commons. They would also help in finding a company such as CamelBak or Tervis water bottle companies to provide donations to the school as well as local companies to help with the cost and maintenance of Blue Valley West Water Bottle Program.

4 Environmental Impact Plastic water bottles are bad for the environment for many different reasons: Incinerating used bottle products produces toxic byproducts such as chlorine gas and ash that contains heavy metals (Jewell, 2010) 86 percent of plastic bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter (Jewell, 2010) According to the Ocean Conservatory, plastic bottles are the most prevalent form of pollution found on our beaches and in our oceans (Schriever). Plastic leaches into the water it holds, which has been linked to health issues like reproductive problems and different types of cancer (Schriever). In addition to helping the environment, this water bottle program could also help fellow BVW students achieve weight loss goals by choosing water instead of drinking sugary drinks Many weight loss success stories begin with this simple switch-switching out two 12 oz. soda cans a day for two glasses of water could easily save 1960 calories per week (Lieberman 2011).
