The Language of Anatomy

What is Anatomy? The branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms.

The Anatomical Position 5 Characteristics... 1. Body is erect. 2. Face is forward. 3. Arms at sides. 4. Palms facing forward. 5. Feet slightly apart.

Directional Terms 10 Terms Describe the relationships between different body parts!

Make a Chart... TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE

TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE Superior Superior structure is on that is located above another one. The nose is superior to the mouth. Inferior An inferior structure is one that is located below or under some other structure The mouth is inferior to the nose.

Superior Inferior

TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE Anterior A structure that is anterior to another one is closer to the front of the body The biceps are anterior to the triceps Posterior A structure that is posterior to another is closer to the back of the body The triceps are posterior to the biceps

Anterior Posterior

TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE Medial Structures that are closer to the midline of the body The heart is medial to the lungs. Lateral Structures that are away from the midline of the body. The ear is lateral to the eye

Medial Lateral

TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE Proximal *LIMBS* Structure that is nearest the point of attachment The knee is proximal to the foot. Distal *LIMBS* Structure that is further away from the point of attachment The elbow is distal to the shoulder

Proximal Distal Point of Attachment dfgd

TERMDEFINITIONEXAMPLE Superficial Structure that is closest to the skin. The skin is superficial to the muscle Deep Structure that is deeper into the body The heart is deep to the lungs

Practice.... (1) Label 10 sticky notes on your partner using the terms you have used

3 Question Quiz #3 The Language of Anatomy - Directional Terms 1. a) Skin is _________ to muscle. b) The brain is _________ to the skull. 2. a) The elbow is __________________ to the shoulder. b) The wrist is ____________________ to the elbow. 3. a) The sternum is _______________ to the ears. b) The eyes are ________ to the nose.
