Foundation Year is a Generalist Model Generalist means Micro Mezzo Macro Students are placed in a wide variety of agencies First year students do not choose their agency Please do not approach agencies independently Field Faculty Committee chooses and matches student to agency based on Field Application Therefore tells us as much about yourself in your field application

Process for choosing – assigning Agency Faculty Placement Committee places students giving consideration to Student’s prior experience Professional interests – future goals and objectives Students’ individual needs A placement to challenge and expand students prior experience Geographic preference as feasible Note – we live in a big County – be prepared to drive Have a reliable car Any academic / disability accommodations verified by Student Disability Services

Interview Process Be prepared for a professional interview Be mindful of dress, phone & email etiquette Some employers / agencies search Social Media accounts Email from field faculty will ask you to contact your field agency Be as flexible as possible when scheduling the interview Be ready to email your resume prior to interview Most agencies will also have Live Scan and various other background screenings after you have been accepted Immunizations, drug screen etc. Some agencies pay for these – many do not Be aware that you may have to pay for additional screenings

Student Must Pass Additional Steps Agency field instructor will notify SDSU if you have been offered the internship Background and health screenings come after Be aware that your internship is not considered final and confirmed until you have passed additional screenings If you have any criminal background issues Please disclose on your field application Disclose when sent to HR or to field instructor after being offered the internship Full disclose recommended – students get in trouble when they do not disclose and issues are exposed during Live Scan

Additional Policies – FAQ’s Internship Schedule of 16 hours a week will be during business hours on week days We have very few agencies with evening and week end hours Can I intern at my employment site? Answer: It depends Various criteria need to be met and approved by agency director and school of social work director Ex. MSW on site to supervise you Field instructor / supervisor is different person than your immediate work supervisor Agency is able to meet school of social work curriculum requirements

Policies and FAQ’s continued Avoid conflict of interest or dual relationships i.e. please let us know if we unintentionally refer you to an agency where you or a family member has been a client or employee in the recent past Please do not approach agencies on your own Can I recruit an agency I’m interested in? We cannot recruit specific agencies for specific students – but we are open to referrals from interested agencies See procedure for new agencies (It can take several months) http://socialwork.sdsu.edu/field/instructor- resources/application-process/ http://socialwork.sdsu.edu/field/instructor- resources/application-process/

INTERNSHIP AT EMPLOYMENT?
