Chi Square distribution The chi square distribution is a very common distribution used in statistics. A chi square variable with k degrees of freedom is the sum of k independent squared standard normal variables. This is where we get the chi square name from.

Goodness of fit One good use of the chi square distribution is to see if an observed sample follows a hypothesized sample. The formula for that statistic is as follows: X^2 = sum of (observed- expected)^2/expected
