1 W = Distance x Force

2 Answer the riddle  I am a simple machine. I am made of two inclined planes. I am used to cut an object into pieces or push two objects apart. What am I?

3 Standard: Demonstrate the effect of simple machines (LEVER, incline plane, pulley, wedge, screw, and wheel and axel) on work. What am I learning today? How do different levers make work easier?

4 How will I know that I learned it
How will I know that I learned it? I will be able to identify first, second, and third class levers

5 Are you a Lever Lover??

6 3 Tab foldable 1st Class Lever 2nd Class Lever 3rd Class Lever
Fold your sheet of paper in half (hot dog). Fold it in three sections and label it as 1st class, 2nd class, and 3rd class. 1st Class Lever 2nd Class Lever 3rd Class Lever

7 LEVER- A lever is a bar that pivots or rotates on a point (called a fulcrum). Levers work by changing the distances between the force (effort) and the fulcrum and between the load and the fulcrum, by doing this the amount of force (effort) needed to move the load can be decreased, making the job easier.

8 1st Class Lever- Top First Class Lever
On the top tab- draw a picture of a first class lever. Make sure to label the load, effort, and the fulcrum. Effort (Input) Load (output) Fulcrum First Class Lever

9 1st Class Lever- Bottom The load force and the effort force are separated by the fulcrum The movement of the load is in the opposite direction of the movement of the effort. Ex- scissors, see-saw, pliers

10 Remember: The force that is pushing down is the EFFORT FORCE The force of the load or weight is the LOAD FORCE

11 2nd Class Lever- Top Second Class Lever Effort (input) Load (output)
Fulcrum Second Class Lever

12 2nd Class Lever- Bottom A class 2 lever has the load between the effort and the fulcrum. In this type of lever, the movement of the load is in the same direction as that of the effort. Ex: Wheel barrow, Crowbar, Nut cracker

13 Remember: The force that is pushing down is the EFFORT FORCE The force of the load or weight is the LOAD FORCE

14 3rd Class Lever- Top Third Class Lever Effort (input) Load (output)
Fulcrum Third Class Lever

15 3rd Class Levers- Bottom
A class 3 lever has the effort between the load and the fulcrum. Both the effort and load are in the same direction. Ex: Tweezers, Stapler, Mousetrap, Broom, Hockey stick

16 Remember: The force that is pushing down is the EFFORT FORCE The force of the load or weight is the LOAD FORCE
