Living Independently and Being Included What do you think?

What are we planning to do? Minister Norman Lamb has decided he want to publish a document next year asking about some possible changes to the laws The aim is to make sure people can be included and live independently in the community and not be sent to hospitals or care homes if that is not right for them We are hoping to publish it early next year (in 2015)

He wants to do this because: We haven’t made enough progress since Winterbourne View Too many people are still living too far away from family People with learning disabilities and their families are not listened to enough People with learning disabilities have told us that the Mental Health Act is not working for them And Sir Stephen Bubb’s report last week also made some suggestions we want to act on

Does this sound like a good idea? What do health & care services (like doctors, nurses and social workers) need to do to make sure people’s rights are respected? What do we need to do to help people live independently? How do we make sure health and social care services listen to people with learning disability? We want to hear your views?

What are the most important things that happen to people that we should focus on fixing? How could we make it work better when people with learning disability are sent to hospital because of mental health problems or challenging behaviour? How could we make it work better when people are placed in residential care? What can the NHS and councils do to make sure learning disabled people are properly included in community and family life, including people who have more needs? We want to hear your views?

Finally…. Would you be happy to tell us your story or give us some words that we can use in our document? If so please complete the separate form provided. THANK YOU
