Commitment to Sustainability There is growing evidence of the links between green building construction and operations, environmental education and student outcomes. Each school will form a Green School Workgroup to focus on three broad issues: Environmental education Healthy school environment Reducing costs 1 Create school buildings on the cutting edge of technology and environmental sustainability. Green School Workgroup Participants: students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members Green Ambassadors: volunteer facilitators who are passionate about sustainability Goals: Learn about green and sustainable design, construction and operations at your school Influence the design of your school Support the Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards Begin or expand green practices Seek certification as a MD Green School 2

Decide what you have and want – e.g. a garden, an electricity monitor, an outdoor classroom, food education spaces Understand the design process – know when you can influence the design 3 ● Engage your design team – ask questions, tell them what you want and ask them to include your ideas ● Plan for now and the future – build your team for today and when your new school opens Teacher stipends are available for leading the Green School Award application process!
