The Glass Octopus vs. The Blue- Ringed Octopus By- Chloe France Mrs. Heer, Language Arts Mod- 7/8
2
Thesis Statement The Glass Octopus and the Blue- Ringed Octopus may both be octopi, but they are two very different organisms.
3
What do you think of when you hear: “Octopus”?
4
The Octopus When people hear: “Octopus”; they think huge, terrifying sea monster. In reality, most octopi are miniscule or not even bigger than your hand! All octopi have the 3 basic body- parts: the mantle, 8 legs with suction cups or “Suction Disks”, and the ink sac.
5
Commonness of the Octopus Most octopi aren’t very common, they mostly stay out of the human eye’s path. Octopi are actually very shy animals, they don’t interact with any other animals much. The Glass Octopus and The Blue- Ringed Octopus are VERY uncommon to people in the U.S. They’re more common around Australia and near the Caribbean.
6
The Blue- Ringed Octopus Habitat Mostly found in “Temperate waters around Southern Australia”. It can also be found in shallow reefs near: Australia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. Found closer to the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean., Japan, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia
7
The Glass Octopus Habitat Mostly found in the Caribbean. Found in the “Twilight Zone” of the sea. Usually ranges around 0-50 meters in depth.
8
What exactly do they look like? See top picture- Blue- Ringed Octopus See bottom picture- Glass Octopus
9
A little more about the Blue- Ringed Octopus Has poisonous venom. Venom can kill in minutes after injected into you. Victim's muscle movement, including breathing-muscles are gradually slowed and eventually stopped. When excited, provoked, or angry, it becomes bright yellow in color with bright blue rings.
10
Example of Excited, Angry, or Provoked Blue- Ringed Octopus.
11
Glass Octopus Body Parts Made up of a mantle, tentacles, suction disks (cups), ink sac, funnel, and it’s eyes are rectangular shaped. Adult mantles are about 45cm long. Their suction disks (cups) are small, widely separated, and single series. It’s eyes are wide and rectangular on opposite sides of their heads.
12
Example of The Glass Octopus’ rectangular eyes and transparent color.
13
Blue- Ringed Octopus Body Parts It is usually brown with dull blue-ish rings scattered all over it (As I said; when angry, excited, or provoked it turns bright yellow). Made up of a mantle, tentacles, suction disks (cups), ink sac, poison gland, and funnel.
14
Glass Octopus & Blue- Ringed Octopus Behaviors Usually very shy, as all octopi are. Doesn’t try for contact with humans and other organisms. It’s whole life is basically to find a mate, and reproduce.
