2 I2 Components u Connectivity and bandwidth delivery –wallplate and building –campus backbone –gigaPOP u Applications –infrastructure R & D –research –instruction u at least $500,000 per year (+ $25,000 dues)

3 Connectivity at UVa u 5 year rewiring project began in 1992 –first 2 years put fiber to all buildings –next 3 years rewired all buildings –Cat 5 twisted pair plus coax for cable video –wallplates provide voice, data, and video u backbone recently upgraded to OC-12 ATM (622 Mbps) u building-level networks moving from shared 10 Mbps to switched 10/100 Mbps

4 The RIC GigaPOP u Distributed gigaPOP based on Network Virginia u Network Virginia (NWV) is a statewide ATM network u UVa, VT, and ODU each received NSF Connections grants for the initial vBNS connection u Operational since August, 1997 u http://www.networkvirginia.net

5 The Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) u MetaPOP that will serve as an aggregation and exchange point for advanced network services u Participants –RIC –WREN –Maryland GigaPOP –SURA –Bell Atlantic –GTE u Will connect to Project Abilene u http://www.networkvirginia.net/MAX

6 Legion: Worldwide Virtual Computer u Multimillion dollar R&D project in the Computer Science department u Provide the illusion of a single virtual computer u Encompass computers ranging from workstations to supercomputers located anywhere in the world u A key enabling technology: high bandwidth networks with advanced services u Technology partner in NPACI (led by SDSC) u http://legion.virginia.edu

7 Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities u Supports research in the Arts and Humanities using state-of-the-art technology u Fellows are given extensive technology support; both equipment and technical professionals u Has supported several dozen fellows (at various levels) over the past 5 years u Projects tend to have extensive multimedia requirements u Advanced software applications developed u http://www.iath.virginia.edu

8 Instructional Applications u TTI - the Teaching and Technology Initiative u Supports up to 12 Fellows per year u Provides resources for educational innovation –time –technical support –access to new teaching technologies –software to create multimedia instructional tools –hardware for development and presentation of materials u http://cti.itc.virginia.edu/tti
