1 The Bill Of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution PROTECT CITIZENS from the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

2 The 1st Amendment Freedom of: – Religion – Press – Assembly – Speech – Petition

3 2 nd Amendment The right to bear arms (guns)

4 3 rd Amendment No quartering of troops in private homes during peacetime

5 4 th Amendment No searches or seizures of property without a valid warrant describing the place to be searched and the object to be seized. Right to Privacy

6 5 th Amendment Must be indicted (grand jury) - formally accused of a crime No double jeopardy- cannot be tried twice for the same crime

7 5th Amendment Cannot be forced to incriminate yourself (give evidence that will point to your guilt). Right to remain silent.

8 5 th Amendment Due Process of Law – Protection of life, liberty, property

9 5 th Amendment Eminent Domain – Citizens must be paid a fair amount for property taken for use by the government

10 6 th Amendment Right to a fair and speedy trial: Told the charges against themselves Impartial jury of your peers Trial held in district of crime

11 6 th Amendment Confront witnesses against themselves Subpoena witnesses for themselves Have an attorney

12 7 th Amendment The right to have a jury in a civil trial

13 8 th Amendment No excessive Bail; no cruel or unusual punishment

14 9 th Amendment The first eight amendments to the Constitution are not the only rights that the people have. There are many rights that are not listed. RIGHTS

15 10 th Amendment All power not delegated (given) to the Federal government is reserved (saved) for the state governments.

18 Civil War Amendments 13 th amendment- Former slaves are now free No slavery allowed in the U.S. and territories

19 Civil War Amendments 14 th Amendment All former slaves are citizens All born or naturalized citizens are entitled to due process of law

20 Civil War Amendments 15 th Amendment All males 21 years or older are eligible to vote regardless of former conditions of servitude, race, or creed.
