Environmental Science Unit 2

What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space (or volume). There are three states of matter: Solid Liquid Gas

Objectives of this Unit: 1. To recognize that matter is cycled through ecosystems by chemical reactions and physical changes (reused by plants and animals): Water Nitrogen Phosphorus Oxygen Carbon

Objectives of this Unit (cont.) 2. To understand that energy is not recycled flows and is transferred in ecosystems Food chains Food webs Essential Question: How does matter cycle and energy flow in an ecosystem?

The Law of Conservation of Matter (or Mass): States that mass cannot be created nor destroyed. This means the total mass of reactants in a chemical reaction will equal the total mass of the products.

Experiment to Demonstrate this Law: You must wear safety glasses! You must wear an apron! You must not horse around or you will receive a zero for this lab exercise. Please use materials sparingly as I must have enough for all three classes today! Work with your table partner! You must clean your work area when you are finished. No one will be dismissed until all work areas are cleaned!
