Review Key Words Conjunction: a word used to connect clauses Clause: a group of related words containing a subject and a verb Simple Sentence: a sentence consisting of only ONE clause, with a single subject and predicate (verb)

Compound Sentence TWO simple sentences (independent clauses) joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction Independent Clause: can stand alone as a sentence FILL IN FANBOYS IN THE STAR BOX COMPOUND SENTENCE EXAMPLE Example: It was a beautiful afternoon, so I decided to eat dinner at the park.

Complex Sentence Complex Sentence: A sentence that contains an independent clause and a dependent (subordinate) clause Dependent/Subordinate Clause: Contains a subject and a verb but does NOT express a complete thought IT IS DEPENDENT on another clause to make it complete Begins with a Subordinate conjunction (see sheet!) Independent Clause: A SENTENCE! S+V+CT=S

Complex Sentence Example Although Mrs. Brown is short, her personality is very tall. Bold – subordinate (dependent) clause Regular – independent clause (sentence)
