2.  A simple sentence is a complete thought. It has a subject and a predicate.  The yellow pencil is very sharp.

3.  Sometimes there are compound parts to the simple sentence.  The yellow pencil is very sharp and could hurt you.  The yellow pencil and the orange pencil are very sharp.

4.  A compound sentence is one or more simple sentences joined together with proper punctuation.  The yellow pencil is sharp, and I will use it to write my paper.  (If you ignore the conjunction, you’ll see two simple sentences that would be strong enough to stand on their own.)

5.  Can you find two complete thoughts by covering up parts of the sentence? If so, it is a compound sentence!  Draw arrows to show connections between predicates and subjects.  Try out some samples on the next slide…..
