History & Origins  Founded in 1942 and are based out of Tucson, AZ.  Goal: Community transformation through a grassroots response  TYLO is a grassroots organization that promotes the ideals of equality, justice, and self determination.  Members, supporters, and allies of the organization work for positive social change and for the respect of land, people, and culture.

3. History & Origins cont.  Work of the organization is carried out through a multi-tier model of grassroots community organizing and popular education that consists of four key programs:  Barrio Sustainability Project  TYLO Freedom School  MAIZ  Migrant Rights Organizing Campaign

5. Tierra y Libertad (Making Solutions Happen)  We reject racism campaign July 2010: Anti-racism zone declared where the Plaza Azteca businesses will declare a zone of non-compliance with SB1070.  SB1070: Immigrants 14 years of age and older who are in the country for longer than 30 days are required to register with the U.S. government and must carry their documents at all times. Failure to have documents at all times would result in a federal misdemeanor crime.  Allows for racial profiling and exploitation.  Allowed when there is a reasonable suspicion for illegal immigration status.  First violation a required minimum $500 fine  Second violation minimum $1000 fine, plus a maximum jail sentence of 6 months.

6. Tierra y Libertad (Making Solutions Happen) cont.  Campaign leaders include: Rachel Kataya, Lui Perales, Harmony Pringle, Claudio Rodriguez, Layla Marie, Nikko Gomez.  Over 300 members.  A Grass Roots Organization, Worked with No More Deaths volunteers, and other activist groups in the Tuscon area.

7. Concluding Remarks  Our organization Tierra Y Libertad is a grassroots organization that was found in 1942 and located in Tucson, Arizona but since 2001 this group has consistently worked for positive change. This organization promotes equality, justice and self-determination. All of the members work positively to encourage social change for the respect of land, people, and culture.  This group helps combat oppression by working with four key programs. Recently the Tierra Y Libertad organization has been campaigning against liquor licenses and the creation of Barrio food processing center they also helped with St. Johns school community garden.  According to their Facebook page, “Since 2001 TYLO has focused on building multiple examples of positive social change and community transformation in the barrios where we live. Work of the organization is carried out through a multi-tier model of grassroots community organizing and popular education that consists of four key programs: Barrio Sustainability Project, TYLO Freedom School, MAIZ, and the Migrant Rights Organizing Campaign!” (TYLO Facebook page).  This group helps support the local immigrant community by holding forms for these people that may face harsh unjust laws. They educate these immigrants on their rights; provide emergency savings, and text message alerts about immigration sweeps. This organization has a lot of great information and pictures of what they have accomplished on their Facebook page.
