The Conditional Mood in the Present Tense The Conditional Mood is used for two basic functions: 1) To discuss what you would do in a given situation. 2) To make a polite request.

To form the conditional of -ER and -IR verbs, add the appropriate ending to the infinitive. For -RE verbs, drop the final E before adding the ending.-ER-IR-RE

I would study more if the teacher were nicer. J’étudierais plus si le prof était plus sympa.

Students would talk a lot in their classes if they were good friends. Les étudiants parleraient beaucoup dans leur classes s’ils étaient des bons amis.

If I can finish my homework before dark, I would play baseball. Si je peux finir mes devoirs avant la tombée de la nuit, je jouerais le base-ball.

If I had a million dollars, I would buy an elephant. Si j’avais un million dollars, j’achèterais un éléphant.

If I could change the world, I would end all suffering. Si je pourrais changer le monde, je mettrais fin à toute souffrance.

Sometimes, the conditional is used to make a polite request. Je voudrais le poulet avec les pommes de terre, s’il vous plaît.

It is also used to discuss things that you would really, really like. J’aimerais (bien) voir ma groupe musicale favorite en concert.
