Learning Progressions - Unproven Tools While learning progressions have been extensively developed in recent years, the ways in which they might support teachers in conducting formative assessment are not yet fully understood, and as such, learning progressions are as yet unproven tools for teaching and learning. Insight PD Six third grade teachers from a large elementary school in the Midwest participated in approximately 20 hours of professional development: ❖ Introductory Webinar: What are Learning Progressions? How can they be used for Formative Assessment? ❖ Face-to-Face Sessions: I. The Learning Progression II. Performance Assessments III. Classroom Activities IV. Student Profile ❖ Virtual Forum: Questions of the Week

6. Initial Findings and Next Steps ❖ Overall improvement in teachers’ abilities to match exemplar responses to stages of the LP from the pre-test to the post-test ❖ Created online modules based on the initial PD. ❖ PD reduced down to 6 hours online. ❖ Now piloting it internationally.
