Job Shadowing Project Overview

Purpose Put you in contact with the world of work…reality Encourage you in relevant and purposeful career exploration Help you focus on career opportunities before entering high school Part of the 8 th grade curriculum; all 8 th graders do it

Step One…Holland Code Complete the survey on Friday in class Survey will give you a three letter code, based on your interests No one code is better than another The code is a generalization and does not strictly suggest your future Handout included More info to come tomorrow

Categories Realistic – outdoorsy, mechanical, physically active, competitive, assertive Investigative – curious, inquisitive, questions things, observes rather than acts Artistic – creative, original, independent, inventive Social – friendly, outgoing, compassionate Enterprising – self confident, ambitious, determined, business oriented Conventional – organized, self sufficient, practical, like rules and regulations

HOLLAND Handout Code will be determined on Friday Definitions will be given on Friday Additional information can be found online Handout is due on Tuesday, September 15th

Step Two…Shadowing Shadow a person in the work place Shadow for four hours, does not have to be consecutive Shadow in an area according to your Holland code, does not have to satisfy entire code Shadowing hours can not be completed during school hours Shadowing needs to be finished by Friday, February 19th Handout included

When Shadowing… Plan ahead Make contacts, schedule shadowing Be sure to dress appropriately Ask if you can take pictures and/or video Record information based on the attachment Handout included but not graded

Who to Observe Parent Friend of the family Relative Career observed should fall within on of the letters of your HOLLAND code See me if you can not find a representative

Step Three…Prepare Presentation Take your notes from the shadowing experience and prepare a presentation Presentation should include 6 areas bulleted Presentation should be four to six minutes Presentation should include a visual

Presentation Musts… Make eye contact Use proper grammar Make reference to your visual Appear excited about your work and enthusiastic about the experience

Presentation Visual… Must be some form of technology Must highlight the experience and the 6 bulleted items Needs to be turned in early so as to be tested Due on Friday, March 11 (subject to change) Late visuals will be penalized

Supportive Visual Aid Diagrams or charts (computer generated) Power Point presentations Video/movie Prezi presentation Computer graphics (realistic pictures; no clipart)

Visual…Due March 11th Be creative Think outside of the box Produce a printed copy of the visual or provide a link AND Turn in a flash drive with your visual saved
