Chemical storage This guide has been developed to help teachers store science chemicals properly. The MSDS is the authoritative source of information for each chemical. It should be consulted if there is a conflict with the info in this guide

The shelf layout tab shows where chemicals should be stored according to their chemical family.

The Chemical tab lists almost 1000 chemicals. You can determine where they should be stored and what hazards they pose.

Scroll over for more information including the Chemical Abstract Service number.

To determine where a chemical should be stored just look under the Storage Category heading. To see what chemicals are in a particular chemical family select that family from the pull-down menu. In this case we will check the Inorganic-3 family of chemicals by selecting I-3.

All the Inorganic-3 chemicals appear. To see where they should be stored refer back to the shelf layout tab.

The Inorganic-3 chemicals are stored here.

The same procedure can be used to determine hazard rank. In this case we will see the chemicals having a hazard rank of 2.

Here they are..

Create a list of the chemicals in your lab by placing an “X” under the filter column….

…now select “X” from the pull-down menu

Only the chemicals in your lab appear. Now you can create an inventory and store your chemicals properly.
