3. How it works… Make 1 of the Independent clauses a subordinate clause by adding a dependent word. Sometimes you have to revise the sentence to make sure it still makes sense. –Choppy: We played with our Xbox 360. Mom and Dad went to the store. –Combined: We played with our Xbox 360 while Mom and Dad went to the store.

4. The Rules… If you use the SUBORDINATE clause 1 st, you need a comma after it. –Subordinate clause + comma + independent clause You do not need a comma when the subordinate clause is at the end. –Independent clause + subordinate clause

Practice… 1.The Aztecs practiced religion. It affected every part of their lives. (that) 2.Aztec craft workers made drums and rattles. Drums and rattles were their main musical instruments. (comma + which) 3.Aztec cities had huge temples. The people held religious ceremonies there. (where)

4.Their empire was destroyed by the Spanish. The Spanish conquered it in 1521. (comma + who) 5.There was very little left of the Aztec civilization. The Spanish invaders tore down most of the Aztec buildings. (after)
