2 Development of Democracy  Democracy is the most common form of government in the world.  The purpose of creating democracy was to overcome tyranny.  Tyranny- Rule by one person or small group

3 Democracy began in Athens, Greece over 2,500 years ago... Demos is Greek for “people” Kratos is Greek for “power”

4 DEMOCRACY: a government run by the citizens of a nation.

5 GOALS OF DEMOCRACY Protect the people Maintain order and balance Provide for the common good Protect life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness

6 Unalienable rights: Rights which are not capable of being surrendered or transferred without the consent

7 "We hold these truths to be self- evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” -Declaration of Independence

8 Representative Direct TWO TYPES OF DEMOCRACY

9 Representative Democracy This form of government began in Rome Officials are elected to represent the citizens Officials make decisions on behalf of the general population examples: -Mayor, Judge, Governor, Congressmen, Senator… -More power to politicians Countries with large populations (ex: USA)

10 Direct Democracy This type of government began in Athens, Greece Every citizen votes on governmental issues  More power to individual citizens Countries with smaller populations (ex: Switzerland)

11 Advantages of Democracy People’s voices are heard You are allowed to disagree with others and the government Separation of Church and State Religion can’t be brought into government Citizens are granted rights that cannot be taken away Provides citizens with assistance (welfare)

12 1.Government decisions are reached very SLOWLY in democratic nations. 2.People have to vote for a democracy to succeed 3.Your representative might not share your point of view. Disadvantages
