Energy Transformation Notes 6.9(A) The student will investigate methods of thermal energy transfer, including conduction, convection, and radiation.
2
Energy Resources Thermodynamics is the study of energy 1 st Law of Thermodynamics – energy is always conserved, can’t be created or destroyed. 2 nd Law of Thermodynamics – If no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy is always less than the initial state.
3
Conduction – The transfer of energy through a solid. (heat goes through pan on stove) Convection – Transfer of heat in a fluid, gas or liquid.(rice rising and falling in boiling water) Radiation – in the form of waves. Doesn’t require a medium to travel through (Heat from the sun)
4
Type of matter through which energy is transferred EnergySolidLiquidGas ConductionXPossible ConvectionXX RadiationXXX
5
Types of Energy Mechanical –motion Thermal – heat (toaster) Radiant/Solar – (sun) Sound – carried by sound waves/vibrations (stereo) Electrical – electric charges (anything that plugs in) Chemical – Chemical reaction (eating something)
