2 Step 1: Read the Script I feel like this step is obvious. You need to know the story that you are costuming. Create a Costume Chart with information from the script and your director.

4 Step 2: Analysis What is the costume budget? What is the production concept? In what period are we producing the play? When is the first dress rehearsal? Does the director want a costume parade? What does the set look like? What is the color palette? What is the lighting designer’s color palette?

5 Step 3: Research When you know what period/concept you are using, you can begin to look through history for resources. Use primary resources whenever possible. Clothing and accessories Photographs Paintings Period vs. Region

6 Step 4: Brainstorming Sketch ideas. Make Concept art.

8 Step 5: Selection Pour through your sketches and find the design that works. Find your favorite.

9 Step 6: Rendering Create a “final copy” of your costume design.

13 Your Assignment: Design 3 characters from a fairy tale. You may not place the fairy tale in its original time period and setting. Today, brainstorm and decide on your fairy tale and setting.
